Reggae Night to Remember

Collie Buddz, Rebelution, and Zion
I could not have been more excited when my good friend informed me that Rebelution, Collie Buddz, and Zion I would be playing in Eugene August 16th! We of course instantly agreed to buy tickets and car pool to Eugene (as any green supporting hippies should do). When the 16th FINALLY arrived my bags were packed and ready to go, and after the usual grueling errands before a road trip (food, gass. . .& grass!), we were finally on the road to the show! Four hippies in a Tahoe with Rasta bumper stickers and a head full of dreads heading South.  It probably tipped people off that we were heading to the concert, because on the way there a couple of people rolled down their windows to ask if we were on our way to Eugene for the show =D.
When we pulled into the georgeous park, smoke clouds billowing out the windows, excuse me DUST clouds billowing behind us.   I was amazed to find myself walking/dancing past trees and park views! I was lead toward the Reaggae music with excitement, like I had the munchies and was following some amazing home kitchen baked smell. Once through the lines I headed straight past the food and drink vendors (though I did get a Rebelution Tshirt later), jogged up the stairs and HOLY NUGGETS! I was awestruck for a minute by the stunning outdoor ampitheater Eugene has tucked away in that park! Not to mention I was a little awestruck at how much sound was vibrating up the hill at me. Thrilled would be a good word to describe me at that point. We decided to work our way through the happiest and chillest crowd I've seen in a while, to the first grass ring of onlookers. There was an adorable couple swing/tango dancing to our right who were putting on their own little show and obviously having a great time.

The opening show was great and even invited the crowd up on stage to dance (which resulted in the singer being mobbed with hugs and dancing people). We sat in the grass and listened to the opening show as the sunset behind us, and the lights coming off the stage got progressively cooler and brighter as they shot through the ampitheater into the night like the sound. The music was great when I got there and only got better as the night went on. I could see an alligator bouncing above the crowd, as it appeared that someone had the great idea to bring along this fabulous blow up friend. When I decided to swim through people towards the front for a closer view as Collie Buddz came on, I was surrounded by chill vibes and everyone was dancing their hearts out :) I tossed a few SmokinJs papers into the air. Who knows maybe a couple of the jays I saw being passed around were wrapped in those papers. Need-less to say everyone in the crowd was obviously feelin great as Rebelution rocked everyones feet, even pulling out a whaling saxophone and an epic set of electric clarinet. The music was great, even when the end of the evening had closed in on us, and the last song had been played, the crowd simply hadn't had enough. The cheers did the trick because a few more songs were played, and everyone danced the last of their energy out, untill finally we all had to admit it had been a GREAT night but the end had come! Now for the drive back to town, and another awesome shift at Smokin Js!

Smokin Js at Seattle Hempfest 2013

Seattle Hempfest is the largest annual cannabis law reform event where cannabis enthusiasts of all kinds gather to educate the public of the many products and benefits that the cannabis plant can provide. It was founded on the belief that the public is better served when citizens and public officials work cooperatively in order to successfully accomplish common goals. This year was definitely one for the history books with over 250,000 people coming out to show their support and with the recent Washington legalization laws, we are finally starting to make headway. It's definitely exciting, but it's only the beginning.

This year there were over 105 speakers, 110 bands, and 400 vendors! It's every stoners paradise. Pipes from high end glass to Chinese imports, the latest smoking gadgets, good music, and any kind of information you could want, whether it be how to obtain your MMJ card or grow tips from the Grow Bible expert, Jorge Cervantes himself.  Stretched along the waterfront for a mile and a half in downtown Seattle, the view alone is worth the trip.

Nicole and I ventured into the big city on Saturday to check out the action, and supply the good people of Hempfest with our Smokin Js hemp papers and coupons. We got to drool all over some incredible pieces and learn about some new products. The current variety we have available to us is unbelievable.

I have to say that after this weekend, I love my Cloud Pen even more (if that was possible). One of the highlights of our trip was definitely being allowed to kick it up on the rooftop of the Further bus and blow some bubbles.

As always, Seattle treated us very well. Anyone who hasn't checked it out, I recommend you put it on your bucket list. The most amazing part about Hempfest is that it's completely powered by volunteers and donations. What's sad is that the average donation per person is about thirty eight cents. If the cops are going to hand out Doritos to the stoners of Seattle, I think we can do better than that.

Marijuana Legalization in Washington State Update

Legal Marijuana Update
by Smoking Js Sean W.

After squeezing through the midsummer madness at your local super market you almost have everything you need to try making your very first batch of cannabis cookies.  Flour, eggs, sugar—Check.  Chocolate chips and vanilla extract—Double check.  Looking into the cart you know something is missing…something important.  Although you’ll have no luck finding it next to the herbs in the produce section, it was legalized eight months ago…so where’s the weed?

Last November, when the citizens of Colorado voted to legalize marijuana the Colorado Legislature was charged with writing the laws for regulation.  Voters here in Washington state approved a similar bill, but the responsibility for establishing and regulating the new industry was left in the hands of the Liquor Control Board.  In mid-May, the Washington LCB issued a first draft of proposed laws for regulating the legal production, processing, and retail of Marijuana here in Washington state.  Some critics complain of how long everything is taking.  However, we have to remember that the LCB is in completely uncharted territory.  There are no other examples to follow.  The board says it is committed to tracking each plant that hits retail, “from seed to sale.”  What this means is that all marijuana intended for retail stores will be accounted for—from first sprouting until it is properly packaged and showcased on store shelves.  The LCB released a second draft of updated rules in early July.  This version will likely be finalized in coming weeks and will lay the guidelines governing the new recreational pot industry.

Producers (Growers), processing facilities , and retail locations will all be required  to maintain 24-hour surveillance of their facilities.  Producers will use their green thumbs to enter daily counts for the weight of all plants grown, even  crops that are defunct and that will never see store shelves.  The May draft of the laws originally prohibited growing marijuana outdoors.  This was the largest criticism made by potential growers.  After feedback and further consideration, the LCB decided to allow outdoor grows.  Provided the locations still meet the high security standards.  A chain link fence does a pretty good job of saying “Authorized Employees Only.”  Growers are going to be encouraged to go for organic. There will be restrictions on what chemicals may be used on parts of the plant intended for consumption.  Overall the goal is to keep the marijuana as healthy and as safe as possible.  If it’s super kind bud that just so happens to be organic, who’s complaining?

Processors will be responsible for fine-tuning the new Marijuana crops before they are shipped to stores.  It may sound a little like working in Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory, mixing, matching, infusing new strains into new recipes until some delicious treat sits before you, ready to take you around the world and back.  Although processors might have expanded creative freedoms, their duties to the public are great.  Processors will be responsible for the proper labeling of all marijuana products.  The Liquor Control Board issued a sample of how future packaging will most likely look:

The label will inform consumers of the THC/CBD percentages of the plant or infused product they purchase, net weight, and the name of the strain.  If it is a baked good or infused product the label will specify the total THC contained.  The LCB defines an infused product serving size as 10mg of THC.  Ten servings or 100mg will be the maximum any single package may contain.  And of course all packaging will display the cautionary disclaimer: Warning-may be habit forming.

Retail locations, where recreational users will go for their one-stop-pot needs, will not be popping up on every corner.  In fact, finding a suitable location for your Retail store may require some extensive research.  Retail stores will not be allowed to operate within 1000ft from schools, parks, day cares, libraries and public transfer service stations.  Under  LCB definition any covered bus stop counts as a transit station which disqualifies many high traffic areas from being eligible locations.  One Seattle law group that worked with the Washington Cannabis Association took the opportunity to suggest improvements to the first-draft laws.  They proposed redefining some of the language used in the laws: a bus stop would not fall under “Public transit station” and “Arcade” would have a narrower definition so potential Retail operators aren’t banished to remote locations, “five miles out of town, pass the old barn, third shop on the right.”  The actual number of retail locations will be based on a region’s population and demand.  If a region receives more applications than allotted licenses a lottery decides who will get the license.

So it’s April and it’s the grand opening of a new marijuana retailer in your area.  If you are twenty-one or older you’ll be invited to come in and stock up on some kind bud.  Maybe some cannabis infused butter for the morning bagel and some cosmic brownies for dessert.  Each infused product informatively displays THC content and any food ingredients used.  After selecting a pack of pre-rolled joints you kindly ask the salesperson, “and what varieties do you have for oils?”  The earlier drafted laws prohibited marijuana concentrates such as hash or oils.  Hits of highly potent THC oils, more commonly known as ‘Dabs’, continue to grow in popularity; especially amongst fresh generations of smokers.  Luckily for all of these enthusiasts, the LCB decided to allow the sale of concentrates as long as they are infused with trace amounts of another substance like vegetable oil.

Slowly, but with visual growth, Washington state inches towards a workable, legal weed market.   The Liquor Control Board continues to emphasize its commitment to public safety and health in all aspects of production.  But what guarantee of security is offered to the potential producers growing Washington’s newest commodity?  Well, none really.  The growing, distribution and selling of Marijuana still is illegal under Federal law.  Shortly after the passing of Initiative 502, Governor Jay Inslee met with U.S. attorney general Eric Holder.  During this encounter Gov. Inslee laid out the state’s plans to keep Washington grown weed within state borders.  Although the federal government has not declared it will put a stop to the industries emerging in Washington and Colorado, it has not given its blessing either.  News reports have hinted that some in Congress are in favor of letting states decide.  This would not be a federally endorsed legalization, instead, states would choose how to approach the issue of marijuana.  In the meantime, the federal silence is not comforting.  July brought federal raids on medical marijuana dispensaries in Olympia and Seattle Washington, with little information as to what caused those facilities to be targeted.  As the LCB moves forward with preparations to get marijuana in-stores by spring 2014, any indications of what the federal government will allow (or overlook) are welcome.  If the market is allowed to open as planned, it will be up to Washington to demonstrate to the federal government that they will not become the newest distributors for marijuana to other U.S. states.

2013 Degenerate Flame Off

Smokin Js invaded the 5th Annual Degenerate Flame Off in Eugene, Or.  We sent our own Megan "Mega" Mac to cover the event.
Anyone can appreciate a piece of art. You find a whole new respect for the piece and the artist when you witness the making of it from beginning to end. This year I was lucky enough to attend the 5th annual Degenerate Flame Off. It was three days of artists and enthusiasts coming together to celebrate and show their support for the functional glass art industry. This time of year, an entire weekend of sun and 70 plus degree weather is practically unheard of in Eugene, Oregon, but I'm still sportin' the tan lines.

All three days artists collaborated on live demos, and vendor booths offered everything from glass to clothing, and even back massages. Live music played, kegs were tapped, and the sweet smell of maryjane filled the air. Although there seemed to be people and excitement everywhere, the atmosphere was very mellow with a "one love" type feeling.

Saturday was the main event. Eighteen glass blowers competed in a grueling 8 hour flame off. Being outside of their normal environment with hundreds of spectators, they can only hope for the best. Elbo was awarded the people's choice award with his amazing tortoise and the hare oil rigs: "it's not a contest." All of the artists definitely brought their A game. There were a lot of great pieces created!

People's Choice Award by Elbo
Steve Bates brings the concept of science to glass blowing like no other. After Sundays awards ceremonies were all wrapped up, he brought his giant triple mouth-piece waterpipe out into the lawn so we could REALLY appreciate it. Everyone was eager to load the bowl and test it out. I still get giddy just thinking about it.

Mega Mac taking the challenge of the Steve Bates creation.
This year was the DFO's largest turn out yet and, with each year it will only get bigger and better.

Pictures speak louder than words so please be sure to check out all of our pictures.

Have a great day Smokin J-ers!!!

Ariel is a Glass Hound

HIGH everyone! Ariel here.  This morning I woke up with a 'halfbaked' idea! Every day as I get ready for work, and take one last longing glance at my glass.  I wish I could bring all of my favorite pieces to share with all the amazing people I see walk through our doors at Smokin Js. I wish I could create moments with so many! Since I can't physically accomplish this, I figured I could at least semi accomplish my mission by pulling out all the pieces I could find and taking most of my morning to have a 'red carpet photoshoot' in the sun for all of my current glass lovelies, so I can at least share and talk about them with you.

Some of these pieces I bought way before I even started working for Smokin Js.  American made glass, all you'll find at Smokin Js, has stood its test against time, and with a little TLC, I've had my favorite dry pipe for roughly 5 years now :) . . . and yes that is a sand blasted hammer head shark, and sea turtles!

My rainbow side car bubbler has been with me for longer then I can remember! SmokinJ's is like the pot (of gold?) at the end of the rainbow ;) Always treasures to be found!

I don't even have words MONUMENTAL enough for how this 3ft ADS TOWERS over all other water pipes in my heart, thanks Tmo for helping convince me I needed her (not that it was very difficult), you always guide me to pieces I love!  When I found the rainbow dot-box bowl, I knew it was a match made in heaven.

Careful or your eyes might pop right out! When you see my Dragon bubbler next to our new eyeball sherlocks, I'm not sure if its my heart or my eyeball that's melting at the sight of these ;)

A picture I'll save for a smile on even the cloudiest day, Blaze1 Gloria bubbler to the left of my gandolf sherlock (which has been wrapped with copper wire and stones, I've gladly purchased 2 of those in the years), and my new Synthesis fummed hammer that's been colored in (we've got them in pipes & sherlocks as well)

I could go on showing close ups for a while yet (I really do stare at glass for hours guys, I mean I don't even get enough at work apparently), but I'll wrap it up with a stunning piece of art made by KMack I just purchased yesterday, with help from Jay for always knowing where to look, Alex who sent a picture to me as soon as it came in, Tmo who pointed it out when it hit the shelf with 'my name on it', and Nichole who sold it to me as soon as I had cash in hand.  Honestly its like here at Smokin Js we are a group of treasure hunters who can't rest as long as there's still beauties to be seen! We go from hunting and searching for customers, to hunting for each other, and of course last but not least
ourselves ;)

Thanks to you all for the love, honesty, friends, family, and all the memories we build around quality glass!

& as always, Thanks Smokin Js!

~Ariel

Smokin Js Invaded Seattle for 4/20

Smokin Js invaded Seattle for 4/20 this year.  The universe aligned in a magic way for one of our employees, Josh.  He is a big Supercross fan, and it just so happened that 4/20 was the date for the Seattle Supercross!  So we stuff Josh with a bunch of SmokinJs.com coupon cards, smacked him in the butt, and sent him on his way for a special adventure.
The first stop for Josh was the Seattle Supercross.  The stadium was packed with over 50 thousand people, the races were awesome, and the event had machines that produced giant fireballs throughout the day.  Justin Barcia took the main event win with Ryan Villopoto finishing second.

Josh finished the 4/20 night at The Luxe in downtown Seattle for 420fest.  The club had live music and a full bar.  The Luxe was packed for the event as you can imagine being in Seattle, Washington ... The EVERGREEN State!  We lost track of Josh as he fully submerged himself into festivities of the night, but we were able to find this picture showing Josh partaking in what he called the biggest joint he has ever seen!

You never know where you will find the Smokin Js crew across the Pacific Northwest enjoying a wide variety of events and festivals.  When you fins us be sure to get some free swag and coupons.

4/20, Smokin Js, and the Brian Grant Foundation

4/20 Sale Fundraiser

Smokin Js will donate 10% of all sales on 4/20 to the Brian Grant Foundation, an organization created to "help those affected by Parkinson's disease to live active and fulfilling lives."

Please forward this information.

We at Smokin Js live with Parkinson's disease every day.  One of our team members, Tmo Teeling, is in a battle with Parkinson's disease.  We wanted to do something special for our annual 4/20 sale event this year.  Supporting Tmo and the Brian Grant Foundation is a perfect addition to the salebration.

The Brian Grant Foundation was created by former Portland Trailblazer power forward Brian Grant.  After a 12 year career in the NBA, Brian was diagnosed with Young Onset Parkinson's disease in 2008.

Smokin Js very own Tmo Teeling was diagnosed in 2011 with Rapid Onset Distonia Parkinson's disease.  Currently 34 years old, Tmo has worked for Smokin Js for almost two years.  He was no longer able to keep his high tech job at a solar cell manufacturing facility after he became sick and started showing symptoms of Parkinson's disease.  Smokin Js was very fortunate to be on the list of dream jobs for Tmo.  Since joining the team, Tmo hasn't just fit in, but thrives.  Tmo brings a product and technical knowledge of Smokin Js merchandise that few people possess.  He also takes great pride in helping customers with care and attention.  Tmo consistently takes notes on the little hard-to-find items customers are looking for, and does the research to find the items in the nooks and crannies of Smokin Js inventory.  Tmo puts so much care and attention into special customer requests that we created a new position and title and threw it into his daily job duties.

Smokin Js, Tmo, and the Brian Grant Foundation have a natural synergy.  The Brian Grant Foundation was created to help families affected by Parkinson's disease to fulfill active lives.  Despite Tmo's diagnosis of Rapid Onset Distonia Parkinson's, he manages to lead a very active lifestyle.  He works over 30 hours per week at Smokin Js, and manages to be in charge of maintenance issues and special customer requests.  However, Tmo's true passion has become his motorcycle and racing.  Tmo owns a 2006 1000cc Kawasaki Ninja.  He doesn't just ride the bike, he loves to race it!  He considers himself to be an avid enthusiast with experience at the Portland International Raceway School.  Parkinson's doesn't slow him down on the motorcycle.  The adrenaline helps his body focus and he gets lost on his motorcycle pushing his limits and forgetting about his Parkinson's disease.  Racing is something he can still do and excel at.  He believes his motorcycle racing skills have actually improved since being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.

Tmo in black, knee on the ground, ready to over-take the riders just ahead.
Saturday, 4/20, 10% of all sales will go to the Brian Grant Foundation.  Smokin Js will have special sales and door prizes going all day on 4/20 to support the event.  Come on down to one of our physical retail stores and join in the fun, celebration, and charity event.  All online sales from the SmokinJs.com web site will also be included in the donation total.  We love our customers, thank you for helping us help families affected by Parkinson's disease.

Featured Blower - Scomo Moanet

As an organization Smokin Js takes pride in supporting local glass blowers.  But we don't stop there; we require our glass blowers not just to be great artists, but good citizens as well.  We believe strongly in the karma of a pipe, and we want customers to know when they buy a pipe from Smokin Js they are getting a good product made by good people.  Scott Moan is one of Smokin Js longest tenured glass blowers and one of our favorites!

Scott Moan, aka Scomo Moanet has been blowing glass for 12 years, 6 of them for Smokin Js.  He is 33 years old and based out of Salem, Or.  Scott lives with his girlfriend of 10 years, Jessica.  The two took a big step about a year ago welcoming Penelope into their house.  Penelope is a 115lb Great Dane;)  Scott has a style unlike any other glass blower.  He prefers to keep his hair tight and wears sweaters with button down shirts.  Scott lives by the same creedo as Jay of Smokin Js, "Not trying to be the coolest, just the best."  When he is off the torch, Scott loves to stay in touch with his favorite football team, the Liverpool Reds.  Football is played with a round ball in Scott's world.

As a glass blower, Scomo Moanet is always coming up with new and innovative glass creations.  You won't find another reverse shower head bubbler like Scomo's anywhere!  However, as much as his latest line of sherlock bubblers have captivated glass enthusiasts, it's his Dot Box blowing technique that wows Smokin Js customers every day.  Dot Box is a unique glass blowing technique that is hard to perform and duplicate.  The Dot Box technique creates a pipe that looks like stained glass when it colors in.  Scomo Moanet says,
"Dot Box is a technique of laying fumed dots on top of other fumed dots.  Each spoon I make uses approximately 5 feet of rod.  I'm probably approaching laying about 1 million dots."

One of the best attributes that keep people coming back for more Scomo Moanet glass is the value for quality proposition.  At Smokin Js we always put function, quality, and value at the top of the list when we select glass blowers and pipes.  Scott Moan hits a home run every time with each creation he melts into our cases.  Click here to see Scott's entire selection of glass available at Smokin Js.

Slightly Stoopid @ Crystal Ballroom

Recently Slightly Stoopid visited Portland, Oregon and headlined at the Crystal Ballroom.  Being a Slightly Stoopid fan is a prerequisite for employment at Smokin Js!  We had to be there.  Josh and Megan were sent to represent Smokin Js, hand out some free swag, and enjoy the show.

Josh & Megan @ Slightly Stoopid Jan 2013
It was a sold out show! The Crystal Ballroom had a solid line up: Sindicate followed by Marlon Asher aka the Ganja Farmer to get the crowd pumped up for the main attraction. And they did a damn good job. Normally I hate crowded places, but if I had to be shoulder to shoulder in a crowd, and get real close and personal with some strangers, I couldn't have hand-picked better people. The ballroom buzzed with feel good vibes from the stage to the balcony to the sidewalks of Burnside.

The Sindicate, local to Vancouver Wa, were stoked to be kicking off the night. Lead singer, Dominic got a good reaction from the crowd when he puff puff passed his joint into the crowd. Of course, in Oregon our good friend maryjane is still illegal so it was eventually confiscated. ;) The Ganja Farmer kept the momentum going. The Crystal Ballroom has what is referred to as a "floating floor" and I LOVE it. For me to be able to actually feeeel the music, no psychedelics required, is so cool to me. When Slightly Stoopid took the stage, it was on! They started it off with songs from their new album "On top of the World" and of course had to throw in some of the older favorites. By this time, you could see the steady glow of a burning joint being passed along the crowd. At one point, I was getting them from both sides. 8D .

Fearing the end, "Encore" was chanted until they returned to the stage. Sightly Stoopid thrives on their live shows, and they didn't let us down with a multiple song encore finish. But like all good things, the night had to come to an end and we left the smoke filled Crystal Ballroom.

I do have to admit that I'm a little bummed that they didn't play "Mellow Mood", but I can't complain. It was a killer show! I learned that I could jam out to a saxophone all day long, met some awesome people, and got to see some BEAUTIFUL dreads. This was my first time seeing them live, but I know it will surely not be my last.
